The German Mittelstand is in the midst of generational change: according to KfW, 125,000 owners of small and medium-sized enterprises plan to retire from their companies each year. They want to hand over their firms to successors—but finding them is difficult. The Munich-based startup Viaductus has found a solution to this problem. Co-founder Artur Morozas explains how it works in this interview.

Munich Startup: What does your startup Viaductus do? What problem do you solve?

nnnn

Artur Morozas, Viaductus: We solve the succession problem in Germany. We’ve built an AI-based, user-friendly business marketplace that facilitates contact between business sellers and interested buyers.

nnnn

Munich Startup: But that already exists!

nnnn

Artur Morozas: Our AI integrations (AI-based search function & AI analysis for matching between the interested party and the listing) don’t exist for this purpose yet! But we don’t want to stop there either. Our vision is to build an omni-platform that covers the entire business sales process, from lead to closing.

nnnn

Munich Startup: What’s your founding story?

nnnn

Artur Morozas: Sven and Artur previously worked in M&A and private equity and noticed how under-digitalized and un-automated the industry still works in some ways. We wanted to change that. Then we met our CTO Chris, who implements our vision technically. Chris was previously CTO at Creditshelf.

Viaductus and the search for product-market fit

nnnn

Munich Startup: What have been your biggest challenges so far?

nnnn

Artur Morozas: Product-market fit! We underestimated that because we were convinced we had built the better product for an existing market. We do have the better business marketplace, but we don’t have the reach of incumbents. Our goal now is to find a way to get exclusive deals on the platform and thus attract more interested buyers to us.

nnnn

Munich Startup: How’s business going?

nnnn

Artur Morozas: Things are slowly picking up! We seem to have made the right pivot and we see strong potential. We’re deepening our position in the value chain by offering exclusive and free services for potential business sellers. For example, a free business valuation, which is how every professional business sale begins.

nnnn

Munich Startup: How have you experienced Munich as a startup location so far?

nnnn

Artur Morozas: Sven and Artur have lived here for quite some time. Chris is from Frankfurt and can’t wait to move to Munich too. What’s practical for us is the proximity to our market (especially private equity).

nnnn

Munich Startup: Risk or security?

nnnn

Artur Morozas: Risk equals reward. But the actual risk is taking security for granted.
