Tozero has opened its first industrial demonstration facility at Chemiepark Gendorf. The Munich startup aims to recover lithium, graphite and nickel-cobalt materials from old batteries there.

The Norrsken Foundation has published its impact/100 list this year – and Munich is well represented: five startups from the Bavarian capital are among the world’s most important impact companies. They demonstrate how innovation and sustainability can work together.

Munich-based climatetech company Tozero is cooperating with Japanese EPC specialist JGC Japan to expand recycling infrastructure for lithium-ion batteries in Japan.

The Munich-based startup Tozero aims to build Europe’s leading recycling facility for lithium-ion batteries. On this path, the young company has achieved important progress: a battery cell test with 100 percent recycled graphite has succeeded.

Three winning startups were crowned at the Energy Startup Bavaria founder competition. Two of them come from the Munich ecosystem: Tozero and Qkera convinced with their ideas around battery sustainability.

Tozero secures 11 million euros in an oversubscribed seed round led by NordicNinja. New investors participating in this financing round include In-Q-Tel (IQT), Honda and the JGC Group, a globally operating infrastructure technology company. Existing investors, including Atlantic Labs, Verve Ventures and Possible Ventures, have also doubled their capital. With the fresh investment, the Munich-based startup plans to build its first industrial facility and expand its team, among other things.

The Europäische Kommission has selected 68 startups from 969 applications for support through the EIC Accelerator – including seven Munich startups. The funding pool, which is financed by a combination of grants and equity investments, comprises around 411 million euros.

Things are happening at Tozero: The Munich startup wins the Elevator Pitch Competition and can also celebrate its first commercial delivery of recycled lithium from battery waste.

The Swedish Norrsken Foundation recognizes the world’s most important impact startups each year. This time, it has also found some in Munich: three startups from the state capital make it onto the Norrsken Impact/100.

Munich-based startup Tozero has successfully completed its pre-seed funding round and raised 3.5 million euros. The round is led by Atlantic Labs, with additional investors including Verve Ventures and Possible Ventures. Co-founders from Personio and Finn as well as former Volkswagen board member Jochem Heizmann are also participating.
