phelas wants to turn a very simple vision into reality: we want 100% renewable electricity to become a “self-runner” everywhere on this planet. Over the last 20 years, the world has made progress in reducing the costs of renewable energy production, but scalable storage solutions are still lacking to fully decarbonize the energy sector. The phelas team is developing Aurora, a standardized, mass-produced large-scale electrical storage system based on a new proprietary approach to liquid air energy storage. We use air and gravel as our primary storage medium – both substances are universally available and, unlike lithium-ion batteries, less dangerous and less resource-critical. The technology offers a decisive cost advantage for large quantities of energy while also being cyclically degradable and having excellent environmental compatibility. Since storage is based on already developed and reliable technology (compressors, cryogenic tanks, turbine technology, etc.), the overall system can be operated with extremely high reliability and minimal maintenance requirements. We plan to approach this market as B2B by selling and leasing our storage systems to grid operators, renewable energy operators, energy providers, and energy-intensive industry initially in Germany, Europe, and eventually worldwide.
