MietTiger is a legal tech company that enables tenants to easily, digitally, and without financial risk assert claims for excessive rent. Using our website, tenants can check in just a few minutes with an automated rent calculator whether their rent is too high according to legal regulations – in particular the rent control law pursuant to Sections 556d et seq. of the German Civil Code (BGB) – and whether they have grounds for a refund. After a positive assessment, they can upload their rental agreement and digitally assign their claims to MietTiger. Our system then automatically generates a customized letter of complaint and, as a registered debt collection agency, pursues the claims against landlords nationwide.
Our model combines digitalization, consumer protection, and access to justice: It provides a simple way for people who wouldn't otherwise hire a lawyer due to cost or other obstacles to doing so, enabling them to reduce their rent and reclaim overpaid amounts. Our model operates entirely on a success-fee basis: We only retain 50% of the refund claim and additionally claim the statutory RVG fee from the landlord if we are successful. If the case is unsuccessful, the tenant incurs no costs.
The market is large and continues to grow: In many German cities, rents are significantly above the permissible level, while the rent control law has been extended, thus providing a relevant legal framework for the long term. MietTiger is not limited to individual cities but integrates the rent indices of major cities where rent control applies.
