TUM breaks record for company start-ups

For the first time, more than 100 startups were founded at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) in 2024. The innovation ecosystem surrounding TUM is considered one of the most successful deep-tech hubs in Europe. This record underscores the strength of the company's startup support program.

The TUM reached a significant milestone in 2024: Over 100 startups were founded by researchers, students, and graduates of the university – a record number that underscores the innovative potential of the Munich university. In the same year, more than 1,100 startup teams were supported by UnternehmerTUM and the TUM Venture Labs. In an environment considered one of the most successful deep-tech hubs in Europe, the Munich university is increasingly becoming a driver of innovation and company formation.

Success factors for a flourishing start-up landscape

The Technical University of Munich's success in founding new companies is based on several key factors. Particularly noteworthy is the close collaboration of interdisciplinary teams and tailored support that facilitates the entrepreneurs' path to self-employment. TUM President Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann emphasizes:

"More than 100 spin-offs in one year: This is not only a milestone for TUM, but also an important sign of Germany's future viability as a center of innovation in the current challenging economic and geopolitical situation. The foundation for this success is the entrepreneurial spirit we have been encouraging our university community to embrace for many years."

TUM at the forefront of EXIST start-up grants

A further indication of the Munich university's outstanding position in the field of company start-ups is its leading position in the EXIST start-up grants program. In 2024, more than 30 of these coveted grants went to TUM. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy uses these grants to support university spin-offs that support their teams in founding companies. Since the program's launch in 2007, TUM has secured more than 250 grants in total, making it the most successful German university in this field.

Founding successes and the emergence of unicorns

The Technische Universität München is known not only for its large number of startups, but also for the success of many of its startups. 21 unicorns, companies valued at more than one billion dollars, were founded by TUM graduates and researchers. Among these unicorns is Celonis, the first German Decacorn, a company valued at more than ten billion dollars. This demonstrates the enormous potential of TUM spin-offs and the successful implementation of deep-tech solutions.

Tailor-made programs for sustainable start-up support

Another factor contributing to TUM's success is the tailored support it offers its founders through specialized programs. The TUM Venture Labs offer tailored funding programs in 12 key areas – from quantum technologies to healthcare and aerospace. Close ties to cutting-edge research, technical infrastructure, and experts from the respective industries provide startups with optimal support throughout all phases of their development. In addition, capital from the company's own venture capital fund, UnternehmerTUM, flows into the most promising startups.
