Munich Startup: What does CedarDB do? What problem are you solving?
CedarDB: CedarDB is a powerful, universal database system. It processes complex queries, high-frequency transactions, and everyday reporting with ease. Developed on the basis of decades of research at the Technical University of Munich, CedarDB is the ideal technological foundation for data-driven projects: efficient, versatile, and ready to use immediately.
Munich Startup: Doesn’t that already exist?
CedarDB: Database systems have existed for many decades and are now used in virtually every company. However, processor and memory technologies have evolved massively over recent decades. We therefore developed CedarDB from scratch to fully exploit modern hardware. CedarDB is based on insights from the past 50 years in the field of database systems and is designed for the data processing of the future.
Munich Startup: What’s your founding story?
CedarDB: We met during our doctoral studies at the Technical University of Munich. There we worked on the research project on which CedarDB is based. We soon realized that our technology could also solve urgent problems outside of academia. That’s why, after completing our doctorates, we spun out our startup from TUM.
CedarDB: Technology & entrepreneurship
Munich Startup: What have been your biggest challenges so far?
CedarDB: In research, we focused on very technical problems and solved them successfully. However, developing a product and building a startup requires many other aspects, not just the speed or efficiency of the technology. Over the past few months, we’ve learned a lot about how to build a stable product and a growing company on top of a technology.
Munich Startup: Where do you want to stand in one year, where in five years?
CedarDB: We know that CedarDB can immediately lead to major cost savings in certain industries and enable projects that were previously not feasible due to outdated technology. In one year, we want several companies in one of these industries, such as the fintech sector, to successfully deploy CedarDB.
In the long term, most companies can benefit from more efficient data processing and analysis. In five years, we want to have demonstrated, based on the industries we initially focused on, that CedarDB can sustainably improve many different companies and use cases.
Munich: Best location for B2B startups
Munich Startup: How have you experienced Munich as a startup location so far?
CedarDB: So far, we have been able to take advantage of many offerings at the Munich startup location: starting with startup consulting directly at TUM, via the TUM Incubator, we eventually participated in the Xpreneurs program of UnternehmerTUM. Munich also has many interesting VC investors, and international investors, especially from the USA, show great interest in the Munich startup scene. In our opinion, Munich is the best startup location in Germany for B2B startups.
Munich Startup: Quick exit or long haul?
CedarDB: We already worked on our research project for six years before founding our company. We know that it takes time to gain customer trust and convince them to switch to a revolutionary new database system. In our market, a long-term perspective is essential.
