For the third time, startups have the chance to advance their solutions for greater sustainability as part of the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator and test their technology together with Amazon. 15 startups from across Europe were selected from hundreds of applicants for the four-week funding program – including Munich-based startup Twaice.

The participating startups in the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator receive access to workshops, individual mentoring, a customized curriculum, and connections to relevant networks. This year, the teams also have the opportunity to pitch their technologies for a pilot project with Amazon – which opens up the chance for future partnerships, implementation across Europe, and investment of up to €1.8 million each.

“Enormous value creation across the entire battery lifecycle”

Twaice offers software designed to help companies use their batteries more safely and efficiently. The company’s software analyzes the condition of batteries and provides tips on how to extend their lifespan while saving costs. This allows customers to use their products longer, improve their performance, and increase their sustainability. Twaice co-founder Stephan Rohr explains:

“Our battery analytics software unlocks enormous value creation across the entire lifecycle of batteries for our customers and the broader ecosystem. By participating in this exciting accelerator, we can demonstrate that our AWS-based platform enables a circular economy for batteries, while also learning even more from Amazon’s tremendous expertise in scalability.”

The Amazon Sustainability Accelerator is a four-week program that supports sustainability-focused startups in scaling. Participants get to know and work with experts from Amazon. In addition to workshops, participants receive mentoring and AWS grants worth approximately €10,000 each.

Potential partnership with Amazon

This year, startups have the opportunity for the first time to apply to implement their innovations directly in parts of Amazon’s operations. During the four-week accelerator phase, they receive customized support tailored to their needs to prepare them for a potential partnership with Amazon. Afterwards, they can present their pilot projects. Three startups will be selected to participate in an eight- to ten-week program to plan their pilot projects. Depending on the duration and scope, Amazon will provide financial support ranging from €45,000 to €1.8 million each. Zak Watts, International Director of Sustainability at Amazon, comments:

“I’m delighted to welcome 15 ambitious startups to the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator this year. With their great diversity, we can support even more entrepreneurs in reaching their potential. Not to mention the unique opportunity to test their technology directly in parts of our operations. Our mission is to make the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator the world’s best program of its kind for entrepreneurs who want to develop and scale sustainable innovations.”

This year’s expanded Amazon Sustainability Accelerator is a partnership with EIT Climate-KIC, Europe’s leading agency for climate innovation, and innovation consultancy Founders Intelligence, which is part of Accenture.
