As a platinum partner in the healthcare sector, Munich-based medtech company Brainlab will support the TUM Venture Labs with a multi-million euro commitment going forward. Brainlab specializes in digital medical technologies and the intelligent use of imaging data. As part of the partnership, the Munich company will also contribute its expertise in medical technology and the international implementation of medical innovations. The TUM Venture Labs operated by the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and UnternehmerTUM support startup activities and company founding by students and researchers through a funding program.
Families of startups
To enable not just individual startups, but entire families of startups to emerge, the ecosystem of TUM and UnternehmerTUM wants to establish connections to international cutting-edge research and secure networking with top-tier partners. In total, there are currently eleven TUM Venture Labs covering different topic areas such as robotics / AI, aerospace, and quantum technology.
The TUM Venture Lab Healthcare aims at innovations in the areas of drug development, digital health, and medical technology. The focus also includes technologies for integrating and better utilizing medical data through the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
The Bavarian government and the Strüngmann entrepreneurial family have also provided funding to support the TUM Venture Labs.
“Advancing innovations in medical technology”
Brainlab founder and CEO Stefan Vilsmeier commented on the partnership:
“As a Munich-based company, Brainlab has been in close dialogue with TUM – one of Europe’s leading universities – for many years. We share the common goal of advancing innovations in medical technology. We are therefore very pleased about this partnership and cooperation with the TUM Venture Lab Healthcare. It is very important to us to strengthen the healthcare ecosystem, and as a former TUM student and company founder, I am particularly committed to supporting startups in this field.”
And TUM President Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann says:
“Stefan Vilsmeier has shown how to build a company from scratch into the international elite of medical technology. With him and his company Brainlab, the startups get outstanding mentors and partners by their side. With this intellectual and financial support, the TUM Venture Lab Healthcare receives a powerful boost.”
Brainlab is no stranger to the Munich startup scene: in 2019, the medtech company acquired the medical robotics startup Medineering.
