The question “Where is the best place to live?” is answered by the 2023 city ranking with the same answer as in previous years: in Munich. A total of 71 different indicators from the areas of labor market, economic structure, quality of life, real estate market, and sustainability were included in the assessment. The major city ranking uses this to determine three different rankings. The level ranking captures the socio-economic structures in major cities. In comparing the current status quo, the Bavarian state capital is still at the top with 66.1 points. Mainz with 62.4 and Stuttgart with 60.3 points also make the podium.
In the so-called dynamics ranking, which is intended to predict developments over the next five years, Munich improved significantly. While it only ranked 30th last year, Munich is now back in the top 10 with ninth place this year. Mainz, Berlin, and Leipzig show the strongest dynamics.
Based on the UN’s objectives, the sustainability ranking captures the economic, ecological, and social sustainability of major German cities. In this view, Heidelberg is in the lead, followed by Ingolstadt and Wolfsburg. Munich improved slightly from 18th to 17th place.
