The Munich startup Floy helps radiologists detect difficult-to-see abnormalities using artificial intelligence (AI). Founded in 2021, the startup already completed a €1.3 million pre-seed financing round with German investors in its founding year and a €2.1 million seed financing round with European investors in July 2022. An interview with the two founders Benedikt Schneider and Leander Märkisch.

Munich Startup: What does Floy do? What problem are you solving?

Benedikt Schneider, co-founder and CEO of Floy: We support radiologists in reliably detecting critical abnormalities. When working under time pressure, unexpected abnormalities in particular can easily go undetected. Floy serves as additional security.

Munich Startup: But that already exists, doesn’t it!

Leander Märkisch, co-founder of Floy: Floy is not the only AI company in radiology. However, we are the only ones who have managed to offer radiologists an attractive option for sustainable AI deployment. This is evident in our traction.

Sales processes are a challenge

Munich Startup: What is your founding story?

Benedikt Schneider: I myself had a meniscus tear that could not be properly stitched due to a delayed radiological diagnosis and therefore tore again. At that time, I wondered why AI was not already being used here.

Munich Startup: What have been your biggest challenges so far?

Leander Märkisch: One major challenge is the sales processes with Germany’s largest radiology chains. Our product, concept, and company were thoroughly scrutinized and evaluated from every angle in detail over a long period. We are pleased that we have won over Evidia and RH.

Floy: Global impact in sight

Munich Startup: How is business going?

Benedikt Schneider: We are just celebrating the completion of our 100th German partner practice. This represents a major success for us. We are now cautiously starting to acquire international partner practices.

Within a year, we want to be able to help almost 90 percent of all MRI and CT patients with our product in even more German and already some international practices. In five years, we hope to slowly generate global impact.

Munich Startup: How have you experienced Munich as a startup location so far?

Leander Märkisch: Excellent! With the support of many investors, great talent, and many medtech companies, we feel very comfortable!

Munich Startup: Quick exit or long-term commitment?

Benedikt Schneider: Long-term commitment. Impact is a marathon, not a sprint!
