Founded in 2015, Quantum-Systems develops and sells electrically powered drones (UAS) with a special transition mode. This allows the aircraft to take off and land vertically and then continue flying like an airplane after a brief transition phase. To do this, the motors swivel into a flight position. So far, the Munich-based company has focused on customers in areas such as agriculture or the construction sector. However, monitoring infrastructure or wildlife for nature conservation projects is also possible with them.
What the drones capture with their cameras ultimately doesn’t matter; they are classified as dual-use goods that can be deployed both for civilian and military purposes. Since spring, Quantum-Systems has therefore also been selling its technology to Ukraine. In the course of the Series A round in summer, the company announced that it would also focus more on the growing government market.
Now the drone makers have completed another financing round, according to media reports, in the amount of 17.5 million euros. The funds come from US investor Peter Thiel, Berlin-based VC Project A, and Sanno Capital from Munich. Existing investor Bayern Kapital is also participating again. The capital is intended to flow both into research and development – with a focus on artificial intelligence, autonomy, edge computing, and robotics – as well as into expanding sales.
“Quantum-Systems is one step ahead of the competition”
Uwe Horstmann, Managing Partner of Project A, explains:
“In the past, American and Israeli companies have dominated the drone market. We are pleased that Quantum-Systems now offers a European solution that makes no compromises on technical quality.”
Florian Moerth, CEO of Sanno Capital, adds:
“Whether in agriculture, construction, or for observation in humanitarian operations and reconnaissance – Quantum’s UAS cover an enormous spectrum of applications. The company has the innovation potential to become a European champion in its field through best-in-class sensor solutions and AI.”
And Peter Thiel says:
“The future of UAS lies neither in software nor in hardware alone, but in the intelligent synthesis of both. With this understanding, Quantum-Systems is one step ahead of the competition.”
