Qwello provides cities with a turnkey charging solution by supplying all elements of charging infrastructure, including hardware and software development, installation, operation, and maintenance. The charging stations are also equipped with user-friendly features, such as symbol-based user communication for universal use or options for contactless credit card or mobile payment. The associated app handles billing, reservation, and location search. With this approach, the Munich startup is already active in many European markets, including the UK, France, Spain, and Poland, and secured €65 million in funding in September.
Successful in Europe-wide tender
A concept with which the Munich startup also scored points in a Hamburg tender. The aim of the tender was to expand the city’s existing charging infrastructure of 1,600 charging points according to demand. As part of a Europe-wide public tender by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and Innovation in March 2024, private operators had the opportunity to apply for one of five lots with 500 charging points each.
In the award criteria relevant to the tender, Qwello achieved a rating of “outstanding” in two criteria and “good” in another, thus ranking first in the overall evaluation. This allowed Qwello to win its preferred tender lot. With the concession award of five lots for the development and operation of 500 charging points each, the next step towards expanding the charging infrastructure is now being taken. By mid-2027, the construction of these 2,500 charging points is to be completed, after which they are to be operated for eight years.
Based on its long-standing expertise in project management, permitting procedures, and grid connections, Qwello expects to be able to provide the required charging infrastructure expansion even earlier. In doing so, the charging locations won in the concession tender will complement the existing and other Qwello locations in the Hanseatic city that were awarded in the tender process.
