The year 2025 has shown: Munich’s startup scene is diverse, resilient, and continues to grow despite challenging macroeconomic conditions. The region’s startup community has set trends, attracted investment, and established new formats in public discourse. With 274 recorded funding rounds, we have documented a vibrant capital and innovation climate. Leading the way are major rounds for Helsing, Quantum Systems and Tubulis.
Between growth and realism
In 2025, the mood in the venture capital market remained cautious globally and in Germany. Yet Munich startups held their own, with strong funding rounds, particularly in the deeptech, life sciences, and cybersecurity sectors. Munich’s startup scene and the city continue to strengthen their position among leading startup hubs in Germany and beyond.
However, not all developments progressed linearly upward: insolvencies of individual startups and tightened requirements for sustainable business models showed that the environment continues to professionalize and startups need to align their strategies even more closely with real economic parameters.
Highlights from our editorial team and community
As the editorial team of Munich Startup, in 2025 we reported on the full breadth of the scene; from funding news to startup profiles to analyses of industry trends.
We also launched our new podcast format “Pitch & People”, in which we introduce the people behind ideas and companies, giving founders, investors, and makers a voice. This format complements our editorial offering with an additional personal, narrative dimension.
With our Insights, we counted 274 funding rounds, documenting broad capital interest in Munich and emphasizing the city’s relevance as an innovation driver.
The Munich Startup Festival 2025 further established itself as a central meeting point for the scene. Through keynotes, panels, and networking formats, founders, investors, hubs, and corporates came together – a visible testament to the community’s vitality. The award for “Best Munich Startups 2025” to Sitegeist set additional accents.
Beyond our own festival, established events like Bits & Pretzels and numerous themed meetups enriched the calendar and strengthened the regional ecosystem.
Balance sheet of a community
Munich’s startup ecosystem once again proved its resilience in 2025. Among the positive developments was above all the sustained high activity in the funding market: Munich is and remains one of the most important startup locations in Germany. Particularly technology-driven startups from the fields of artificial intelligence, deeptech, life sciences, and defence were able to convince investors. At the same time, the scene showed itself to be well-networked – events, programs, and formats provided visibility, exchange, and new collaborations. In terms of content, the ecosystem was also perceived as more diverse, professional, and international.
The shift in security policy in Europe has made clear the relevance of technological innovations in the defense and security context. Munich startups like Helsing and Quantum Systems exemplified a sector that had long been marginal and now moved into the center of political, social, and economic debates. Both companies developed into key players at the interface of software, artificial intelligence, sensors, and military application, bringing further focus to Munich as a location.
Investment willingness remained selective, particularly in early stages business models were scrutinized more intensively. Some startups had to adjust their growth plans, funding rounds were delayed or failed to materialize. Insolvencies and restructurings made clear that the market continues to consolidate and economic sustainability moves more into focus. For example, the patents of Lilium have now been sold for good. The pressure to quickly achieve sustainable revenue grew, as did the demands on founders, teams, and strategies. Overall, an ecosystem in transition became apparent: less hype, more realism, but with a stable foundation for long-term development.
Outlook: We’re ready for 2026

The outlook for 2026 is inseparable from the global political situation. Geopolitical tensions, ongoing conflicts, and an escalating security situation shape political decisions. Technologies for security and sovereignty are gaining further in importance. Munich can play a crucial role in this context: as a location for research-oriented startups, as a bridge between the startup scene, industry, and public institutions, and as a European hub for responsible technology development. Against this backdrop, it will become clear how strongly Munich’s startup ecosystem can respond to global challenges in 2026. The prerequisites are in place. Now it’s about using them.
It’s clear: 2026 will be an exciting year for Munich. The Munich Startup Festival will once again bring the scene together and provide further impulses. And Munich Startup itself is facing a reorientation. Exciting developments and formats are in preparation that will make our platform even more relevant to the community. Because this community is exactly what is decisive for actively shaping the economic and social future.
We thank all founders, investors, partners, and readers for a vibrant year 2025, wish you a quiet year-end sprint and a good start to 2026.
