No other higher education institution in the European Union is rated higher in the university ranking of the British magazine “Times Higher Education” than the two Munich universities. Globally, the Technical University ranks in 30th place and improves by 8 places. LMU is displaced by TUM from 32nd to 33rd place.

University ranking: “Great recognition of the achievements of our university community”

The global ranking is led by the University of Oxford ahead of Harvard, Cambridge, Stanford, and MIT. The top ten places in the university ranking are occupied by universities from the United Kingdom and the USA. ETH Zurich then makes it as the first university in another country to joint eleventh place. Further down the rankings in Germany, behind the two Munich universities, are the University of Heidelberg at 43rd place, Berlin’s Charité at 73rd place, and Humboldt University at 86th place. Within the EU, following TUM and LMU is KU Leuven at global rank 42, just one place ahead of the University of Heidelberg, followed by PSL in Paris at rank 47.

“This is great recognition of the achievements of our university community. We have every reason to be pleased. Such results can only be achieved through outstanding commitment and excellent science.”

says TUM President Thomas F. Hofmann.

“Nevertheless, we do not base our future strategy solely on these rankings, but follow our own path. We place great value on providing top-quality medical care in our hospitals, which such rankings do not capture at all. Equally important to us is the quality of training for the next generation of teachers. And of course, the innovation capability of our engineers is measured, but not only by publications—rather, they develop their unique strength at the interfaces with industrial practice and societal relevance, independent of rankings.”

In the two other major global university rankings, the QS World University Rankings and the Shanghai Ranking, the TU München and LMU are also listed as the best German universities.
