The German-French startup Futurail has raised seed funding of €7.5 million. The round was led by Asterion Ventures and Leap435 together with EIT Urban Mobility as well as US investors Zero InfinityPartners and Heroic Ventures.

Futurail was founded in 2023 by former executives from Tesla, Argo AI and Edge Case. The team brings years of experience in autonomous driving from the automotive sector and pursues the mission of making trains the most attractive mode of transport. Alex Haag, CEO and co-founder of Futurail, explains:

“When I led the Autopilot team at Tesla, I saw how autonomous driving can completely transform an entire industry. We founded Futurail to transfer this revolutionary potential to rail transport and make a 200-year-old industry the backbone of sustainable mobility.”

Autonomous trains as an answer to labour shortages

Futurail relies on AI technology to address the growing shortage of train drivers. The so-called Futurail-Driver can be integrated into new trains as well as retrofitted into existing fleets. It is designed to reactivate branch lines and make more efficient use of the entire rail network. Maximilian Schöffer, CCO and co-founder, believes:

“What excites our partners is that autonomous systems enable both growth and efficiency. Operators can run more trains more frequently and at lower costs. This is a completely new situation.”

Strategic partnerships with the French Lohr Group and US startup Parallel Systems strengthen the international focus. CTO and co-founder Patrick Dendorfer emphasizes:

“This is not an outlandish research project. It’s about the serious effort to build a certified, safe system that meets expectations and redefines the way people and goods are transported.”

The funding consists of €5.5 million in seed capital, €1 million in public grants and €1 million from a pre-seed conversion. With the capital, Futurail plans to expand its team, advance pilot projects with leading train manufacturers, and secure approval for the first use case – autonomous operations in terminal stations and marshalling yards.

“Futurail combines solid technical expertise and a long-term vision with proven commercial traction to achieve global relevance. Their technology has the potential to make rail the backbone of sustainable mobility in Europe and beyond”,

says Alexandre Sauvage from Asterion Ventures. And Matthias Kempf, founding partner at Leap435, added:

“Just as electric traction replaced the steam locomotive and ushered in a new era, autonomy is the transformative technology of this century for rail. Futurail is driving this leap forward and ensuring that the European industry maintains its leading position.”
