The Munich startup Usercentrics is a consent management platform. The legaltech company helps other companies with its software solution in “consent management” for data protection. This allows websites and apps to request, manage, and document user consent for data usage in a GDPR-compliant manner. Usercentrics was founded in 2012 and has now received over 21 million euros in venture capital through three funding rounds. Donna Dror, CEO, leads the company from New York and answered our questions.

Munich Startup: When we first spoke with you, Usercentrics had 20 employees and was about to expand into the USA. Now you have 200 employees and are active in 180 countries. How were you able to achieve this goal?

nnnn

Donna Dror, CEO at Usercentrics: Ultimately, it was a combination of timing and luck. Our technology is needed worldwide due to legal requirements, and we’ve turned that into a successful business model.

nnnn

The reason we grew so strongly was a combination of various factors: for example, we focused on innovation from the very beginning – that’s always been the core element of our company. We invest heavily in research and development. And we constantly try to push the boundaries of what’s possible so we’re always one step ahead when it comes to technology and trends. This allowed us to differentiate ourselves from our competitors and remain relevant in a rapidly changing market.

nnnn

Trends, talent, and customer satisfaction

nnnn

Another factor is strong talent. If you want to successfully build a company, you need it at all levels. Hiring the right employees, keeping them, and investing in them is certainly also a key to our success.

And ultimately: a strong focus on customer satisfaction. Because in essence, our success is based on providing value to our customers. So we made customer satisfaction our absolute priority and do everything we can to meet their needs and ideally even exceed their expectations. It’s certainly important never to rest on your laurels. That’s why we’re constantly looking for ways to improve our products, processes, and workflows. Through continuous learning and adaptation, we try to stay one step ahead of market developments and position ourselves for further growth and success.

Usercentrics investors: Strategic partners with added value

nnnn

Munich Startup: What obstacles did you encounter along the way?

Donna Dror: Securing funding from the right investors is always a challenge. It was the same for us. Because it’s not just about raising money, but also about finding investors who are strategic partners and provide added value beyond the financial aspect. We were lucky to find the right investors for us. But it took some time.

nnnn

Apart from that, managing rapid growth is a complex process for any startup. As our company acquired more and more customers, we had to scale quickly to keep up with demand. This required careful planning and swift implementation. This allowed us to ensure that we continued to deliver high-quality products and services to our customers.

nnnn

Comprehensively developed further

nnnn

Munich Startup: How has your solution evolved?

nnnn

Donna Dror: Initially, our focus was on providing a solution for companies to manage user consent so they could comply with GDPR requirements. Over time, however, our product has evolved to meet the changing requirements of the market and our customers.

For example, we expanded the scope of our platform so that companies can now comply with multiple legal requirements worldwide with a single platform. In addition to global data protection regulations such as CCPA or LGPD (Editor’s note: the California Consumer Privacy Act and the Brazilian General Personal Data Protection Law), we also cover specific industry requirements such as those for publishing.

nnnn

Furthermore, we extended our solution so that it works not only for data collection on websites, but also in apps and other digital channels.

nnnn

Overall, we’ve continued to improve the Usercentrics platform and made it more intuitive and user-friendly. Our solution now offers a range of features and tools that help companies manage their consent preferences more effectively, such as customized consent workflows. We also have customization options that, combined with our analytics, enable an optimized consent experience and very good opt-in rates. Our CMP has also evolved from tracker or cookie-based consent to managing general privacy preferences, so consent can be captured at every point where data is collected. This allows you to store consent in one central location to avoid complexity and risks from consent fragmentation.

Munich as one of Europe’s most dynamic startup hubs

nnnn

Munich Startup: And how does it look financially for you?

nnnn

Donna Dror: As a private company, we don’t disclose financial data. But I’m proud that Usercentrics will be profitable by the end of the year. This is an important milestone for us as a company and we’re very excited that we’re so close.

Munich Startup: What role did the Munich ecosystem play in your journey so far?

nnnn

Donna Dror: Munich is known as one of the most dynamic startup hubs in Europe, with a thriving ecosystem that supports entrepreneurs and fosters innovation.

nnnn

One of the greatest advantages of being part of the Munich ecosystem is access to a large network of mentors, investors, and industry experts. Through various startup accelerators, incubators, and networking events, we had the opportunity to connect with a variety of people and organizations that provided us with valuable advice, support, and resources. Moreover, the Munich ecosystem is characterized by a strong sense of collaboration and community. Other startups and entrepreneurs in the region share their experiences and offer advice. This creates a culture of knowledge sharing and mutual support.

nnnn

Munich Startup: What milestones are you working toward next?

nnnn

Donna Dror: The two most important ones are the profitability already mentioned and product diversification. We’re working to expand our offerings so we can offer our customers more than “just” a CMP. We look forward to becoming an even more integral part of our customers’ compliance tech stack, enabling them to champion the protection of their users’ privacy while driving their business forward.
